The Tender
From 1984 to 2021, 50 to 70 of the finest pink, red, blue and violet diamonds discovered each year at the Argyle Diamond Mine, were offered for sale at the annual Argyle Pink Diamonds Signature Tender™. Since 2008, the most notable specimens of each Tender collection were also named, to reflect their historical significance.
The Argyle Pink Diamonds Signature Tender™ was widely regarded as the most exclusive diamond sale event in the world. Each coveted collection was showcased by means of private viewings held in iconic cities across the globe. Only a select group of diamantaires, luxury jewellers and collectors were invited to these viewings, with sealed bids placed for individual or multiple diamonds.
Coloured Argyle Diamonds™ of the calibre exhibited in the Tender were so rare, that in the entire 38-year history of the event, only a little over two champagne flutes worth were ever offered. Their extraordinary rarity was reflected in the value of bids submitted, which had exceeded millions of dollars per carat, particularly those in the rarer colour categories such as Fancy Red
Subsequently, from 2023 to 2025, Rio Tinto launched the Beyond Rare™ Tender: The Art Series. This unique event marked a special chapter in diamond history, paying homage to nature’s most extraordinarily rare masterpieces – the finest white, yellow, blue, pink and red diamonds from the Argyle Diamond Mine in Western Australia and the Diavik Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories of Canada.
